Description A critical vulnerability was found in HDF5, affecting the function H5Z scaleoffset decompress one byte of the component Scale-Offset Filter. The manipulation leads to heap-based buffer overflow. An attack must be approached locally. The exploit has been disclosed to the public and may be used. The vendor was contacted about a batch of vulnerabilities, but their response was to reject without further explanation. The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment.
Recommendations As a temporary workaround, consider disabling the H5Z scaleoffset decompress one byte function until a patch is available. At the moment, there is no information about a newer version that contains a fix for this vulnerability.
