Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions
Linux kernel (affected versions not specified)
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel has been resolved, related to the ext4 file system. The issue occurs when the journal is being destroyed, and an error handling path attempts to start a transaction, leading to a BUG ON condition. This happens because the update super work function can start a new transaction after the journal is destroyed. To fix this, a new mount flag is introduced to indicate when the journal is being destroyed, and the code now falls back to an un-journaled commit in such cases. The sequence of setting the mount flag, forcing a commit, and flushing pending superblock updates ensures that no superblock update will be journaled after this point, making it safe to update the superblock outside the journal.
