Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions Zox News theme for WordPress versions up to, and including, 3.16.0
Description The Zox News theme for WordPress is vulnerable to unauthorized modification of data that can lead to privilege escalation due to a missing capability check on the backup options and restore options functions. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Subscriber-level access and above, to update arbitrary options on the WordPress site. This can be leveraged to update the default role for registration to administrator and enable user registration for attackers to gain administrative user access to a vulnerable site.
Recommendations For Zox News theme for WordPress versions up to, and including, 3.16.0: Update to a version higher than 3.16.0 to resolve the issue. As a temporary workaround, consider disabling the backup options and restore options functions until a patch is available. Restrict access to the WordPress site to minimize the risk of exploitation. Avoid using the affected theme until the issue is resolved. At the moment, there is no information about additional mitigation measures.
