Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions
Linux kernel versions 5.4 through 5.5
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel has been resolved, related to the misuse of non-idle barriers as fence trackers. The issue was caused by a race condition in the barrier processing code, which led to list corruptions when using i915 perf with multiple concurrently running graphics applications. The root cause was identified as a problem in the barrier deletion routine, where the results of the deletion were not respected, potentially leading to list corruptions. The issue was introduced in version 5.4 and started to exhibit itself after a commit in version 5.5.
Recommendations
For Linux kernel versions 5.4 through 5.5, update to a version that includes the fix for the misuse of non-idle barriers as fence trackers. As a temporary workaround, consider disabling the use of i915 perf with multiple concurrently running graphics applications to minimize the risk of list corruptions. Restrict access to the affected barrier processing code to prevent potential exploitation.
