CVE-2022-49955

CVSS v3.1

5.5

Medium

VectorAV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H
Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions Linux kernel versions prior to 6.0.0-rc2-00433-gede0a8d3307a
Description A vulnerability in the Linux kernel has been resolved, related to the handling of MSR[HV] when entering RTAS (firmware) on IBM Cell machines. This issue caused crashes due to incorrect MSR handling. The problem occurred because the semi-recent changes to MSR handling when entering RTAS caused the kernel to attempt to execute user pages, leading to crashes. The fix involves copying the MSR[HV] bit from the MSR value read using mfmsr into the value used for RTAS.
Recommendations For Linux kernel versions prior to 6.0.0-rc2-00433-gede0a8d3307a, apply the fix by updating the kernel to a version that includes the corrected RTAS MSR[HV] handling for Cell. As a temporary workaround, consider disabling the use of RTAS on IBM Cell machines until a patched kernel version is available.
