Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions
Linux kernel versions prior to 6.15.0-rc5-CI DRM 16515-gca0305cadc2d+
Description
The Linux kernel contains a flaw in the drm/i915 subsystem related to lock inversion when pinning to GGTT on Cherry View (CHV) and Broxton (BXT) processors with Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O (VTD) enabled. Specifically, the completion of
i915 vma pin ww() calls a synchronous variant of dma fence work commit(). This can lead to a lock inversion between the reservation ww and cpu hotplug locks. This condition can occur when pinning a VMA to the GGTT address space on certain processors, potentially causing system instability. The issue is triggered when stop machine() is called from intel ggtt bind vma().Recommendations
Update to Linux kernel version 6.15.0-rc5-CI DRM 16515-gca0305cadc2d+ or a later version that includes the fix.
