Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions:
Cisco IOS Software versions prior to the fixed version
Cisco IOS XE Software versions prior to the fixed version
Cisco IOS XR Software (affected versions not specified)
Description:
A vulnerability in the SNMP subsystem could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to cause a denial of service (DoS) condition on an affected device. This is due to improper error handling when parsing SNMP requests. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a crafted SNMP request to an affected device, potentially causing the device to reload unexpectedly. The vulnerability affects SNMP versions 1, 2c, and 3. To exploit this vulnerability through SNMP v2c or earlier, the attacker must know a valid read-write or read-only SNMP community string for the affected system. To exploit this vulnerability through SNMP v3, the attacker must have valid SNMP user credentials for the affected system.
Recommendations:
For Cisco IOS Software, update to a version that includes the fix for this vulnerability.
For Cisco IOS XE Software, update to a version that includes the fix for this vulnerability.
For Cisco IOS XR Software, apply the recommended mitigations as described in the Cisco security advisory.
As a temporary workaround, consider restricting access to the SNMP subsystem until a patch is available.
Avoid using the
SNMP protocol with default or easily guessable community strings until the issue is resolved.Fix
